Types of glass in glazing business

Understanding types of glass in glass and glazing industry

The glass and glazing industry is continuously evolving. Glass is transparent, fascinating, extremely versatile and one of the most important construction materials. Glasses carry lots of engineering properties like strength, workability, transparency, U-value. Scientifically glass is defined as “ a non-crystalline amorphous solid that has the property of transparency, and is used for practical, technological and decorative purposes.” The market has gradually shifted from conventional usage as windows pane to main construction material in new age buildings. In many countries, glass buildings are considered a symbol of luxury. In this article, we will see different types of glasses and their uses. Consumers are shifting from the old school buildings to glass buildings. Glass applications give an elegant and classy look to the place. Glasses on the basis of the industry is divided into mainly two parts:

Types of glass on the basis of industry
Types of glass on the basis of industry

·         Automotive industry: In the automotive industry, glasses are primarily used to make components of vehicles. We can spot many glasses usage in vehicles like windshield, headlight, side windows, etc.  To make these, companies mainly use laminated and tempered glass. Tempered glass is cautiously designed to not harm passengers. So, tempered glasses are mainly used in side windows and rear windshields. On the other hand, Laminated glass consists of a plastic layer between two sheets of glass. In case of accidents, the plastic layer holds glasses and protect passengers.

·         Architectural industry: As the name suggests architectural industry uses glasses that are used in design and construction applications. Architectural glasses are tailored according to their usage. Here, we will see further subtypes. Each type serves a unique purpose.

Let us know some common types of glass:

Float glass

·Float glass is the most common type of glass also known as flat glass or annealed glass. It is named float glass due to its manufacturing process. Float glasses are distortion-resistant. We use it in making other types of glasses like heat-toughened glass and many more. Float glass reflects most of the light that falls on it giving a crystal-clear view. The manufacturer uses natural raw materials that are found on the earth’s surface like Silica sand, dolomite, soda ash, to make float glass. These materials are melted at 1600 degree Celsius and is left to float in a tin. It floats, spread itself, and cools down to form flat glass.

Float glasses are widely used for residential purposes. It is being used in exteriors of commercial places. These glasses break into sharp pieces so are made to undergo lots of processes to increase their applications.

  Tinted glass:

·       Tinted glasses are colourful glasses. To make glass colourful manufacturer adds certain chemicals or ions. For example, sulphur ion adds blue colour in glass and iron oxide gives it green appearance. Addition of ions does not affect any other properties of glasses.

Laminated glass:

·         Laminated glass comprises of layers of simple glasses bordered by a transparent material.  These glasses are soundproof hence are mainly used in building aquariums and bridges. Laminated glasses protect from harmful UV rays so is a great choice for constructing glass canopies.

  Toughened glass:

·       Toughened glasses are very high in-demand due to its safety feature. It is also known as tempered glasses and is widely used in home interiors and swimming pool fencing. These glasses do not break easily and if it does it breaks into very smaller pieces that are safer.

Shatterproof glass:

·         Companies use plastic polyvinyl butyral resin to manufacture shatterproof glasses. As the name suggests shatterproof glasses are resistant to shattering. This plastic material prevents glasses from breaking into sharp pieces in case of any destruction. Shatterproof glasses are highly recommended for floors and windows.

Chromatic glass:

·         Chromatic glasses limit the transparency property of glasses. It protects the interior of meeting rooms or ICUs from daylight. Chromatic glasses have different types of laminations that might be sensitive to either heat or light or electricity.

Extra clean glass:

·         Extra clean gasses are water-repelling or hydrophobic as well as photocatalytic. These glasses are highly attractive. Due to its hydrophobic nature, it is stain proof so, easy to maintain. Extra clear glasses have limited sun reflection properties.

Double glazed units:

·         Double glazed units or Insulated glazed units have layers of glasses separated by vacuum or air. This works as an insulator and traps heat.

Glass block:

·      Glass blocks also known as glass bricks are made by melting and pressing glasses. We use these types of glass blocks to give an aesthetic and attractive appearance to walls.

Sheet Glass:

·         Sheet glass has a flat finish.  The company uses a roller to manufacture sheet glass and a glass cutter to cut it. When the molten glass is passed through the roller sometimes it has small angle distortion. Due to this sheet glasses are used where distortion is not an issue like greenhouses.

  Glass wool:

·       Glass wool is fire-resistant. It is an insulating material made after melting glasses. These types of glass uses borosilicate glass as raw material that consists of silica sands. We use glass wool for hollow walls and drywalls. Glass wool is made of recyclable material and is also soundproof to some extent.
